Alexis Abayomi is the Founder of UCycleSync, a femtech startup and part of the 2021 Future Leaders Programme. Alexis is on a mission to provide personalised blueprints for menstruating women to have symptom-free menstrual cycles.
UCycleSync also provides the tools needed to leverage the strength of each stage of the menstrual cycle for increased wellbeing and productivity.
Here Alexis tells us a bit more about her motivation for starting the business.
Just the way it is?
“I launched this start-up because of my journey from suffering from cramps to being pain-free for 3 years. Imagine being in pain every month, coming to work in pain, struggling to get through the day. What would you do? Where do you go for help?”
“I went to my doctors, but like many women, I was told “that’s just the way it is” and I was prescribed painkillers. Imagine being told to ‘just put up with 30 years of pain’. What does that do for your confidence? What does that do for your wellbeing?
A pain-free cycle
“I was unwilling to accept this situation. Instead, I did my research, I sought help from hormonal health coaches and made some nutritional and lifestyle changes. 2 cycles later, I was pain-free.”
“I was in awe of my body’s ability to heal. I wanted to tell everyone I knew to help them improve their menstrual cycle experience. All I wanted to do was shout out that cramps are not inevitable even though it’s a common experience for so many.”
“Cramps – like other symptoms of hormonal imbalance – can be resolved by addressing the nutritional needs of the cyclical body as well as the stress you cause from working and exercising with a linear expectation from a cyclical body. Imagine playing with Lego and trying to fit a circular piece onto a square piece. That’s what I felt like in the early days of working as a menstruating woman in consulting.”
“Going on this pain-free period journey introduced me to the world of cyclical living. Too often, we feel guilt or shame when we can’t produce the same results one week that we produced the week before. We have these linear expectations of ourselves and this can cause a lot of stress. This is where an awareness of the cyclical nature of the menstrual cycle can help.”
“The Future Leaders Programme has been incredible. I have been introduced to so many people who were able to advise me on how I can move the business forward. We are currently in talks with Difrent to pilot the new version of the app as part of a wellbeing programme. This opportunity was made possible through the Future Leaders Programme and the networking opportunities that it opens up.”
“You can get started using the beta version of the UCycleSync App now, by using the QR code below to download it. With this version, you will be able to learn more about the different stages of the menstrual cycle and how to use food to support each stage. It also helps you plan your to-do-list in a way that leverages the strengths of each stage of your menstrual cycle.”
“A new and updated version of the UCycleSync app will be available for download on the App and Google Play store on the 25th of May 2021. In the new version you will have to complete a short questionnaire, which will allow us to provide a personalised cycle plan. This plan will contain nutritional, work and exercise components that will guide you to achieve symptom-free cycles as well as help you leverage the power of each stage of your menstrual cycle for enhanced wellbeing and productivity.”
